NID DAT 2027: Complete Guide to Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Eligibility & Dates

The NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) is the entrance exam for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) and Master of Design (M.Des) programmes at the National Institute of Design (NID), one of India's top design schools. For the 2027 intake, NID kept the format it introduced in 2026: Prelims are now entirely creative, and only Mains decides your final rank.

This guide covers what changed, how the two stages work, who can apply, and how to plan your preparation.

💡 Tips

The single most important change: NID DAT Prelims no longer carries any weightage in the final merit list for B.Des. It is a qualifier. Your admission depends on the Mains — a Studio Test (60%) and an in-person interview (40%). Plan your preparation around hands-on studio work, not only paper-based practice.

Which Campuses Admit Through NID DAT?

NID DAT is a common exam. B.Des seats are offered at NID Ahmedabad and at the newer institutes created under the NID Act. These are NID Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati), NID Haryana (Kurukshetra), NID Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal) and NID Assam (Jorhat). M.Des is offered at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru, among others.

Each campus offers a different mix of specialisations, so read the admissions brochure for the current campus–discipline list before you set preferences. Common B.Des disciplines include:

  • Faculty of Industrial Design: Product Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass Design
  • Faculty of Communication Design: Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film & Video Communication, Exhibition Design
  • Faculty of Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Design: Textile Design

💡 Tips

You choose your B.Des discipline after the Foundation Programme in the first year. You do not need to pick a specialisation at the application stage, so don't let that decision stall your preparation.

NID DAT Prelims 2027: Pattern & What to Expect

Since 2026, Prelims no longer has a general aptitude (GAT) section. There are no GK, English or reasoning MCQs. The whole paper tests creative ability through drawing and design-thinking questions.

FeatureDetails
ModeOffline, pen-and-paper
Duration3 hours
Question typesDrawing, visualisation, design thinking, composition, storytelling
Typical structure~6 drawing-based questions, most with multiple sub-parts
RoleShortlists candidates for Mains (about 1.5× seats, category-wise)

The 2026 paper was rated easy to moderate in difficulty but lengthy. Many students said the drawing questions did not leave enough time. Speed and time management matter as much as drawing skill.

Typical question themes

  • Memory drawing: draw a scene from everyday life, such as a railway platform, a vegetable market or a classroom during recess.
  • Object transformation: redesign a common object (a bottle, a bucket, a chair) for a new user or context.
  • Visual storytelling: comic strips, sequences or a scene that conveys emotion.
  • Composition & colour: create a poster, pattern or composition using given shapes.
  • Observation & perspective: draw an object from an unusual viewpoint (worm's eye, bird's eye).
  • Design thinking: spot a problem in a given situation and sketch a solution with annotations.

Read our guide to sketching for design entrance exams for a practice routine aimed at these questions.

NID DAT Mains 2027: Studio Test & Interview

Candidates shortlisted from Prelims are called for DAT Mains, which decides the final merit list.

ComponentWeightage (B.Des)What is tested
Studio Test60%Hands-on tasks: model making with given materials, 3D visualisation, material exploration, observation, collaborative tasks
In-person Interview40%Motivation, awareness, communication, and how you think about design

The Studio Test is the stage most students under-prepare for. You may be asked to build a 3D model from clay, paper, wire or found materials around a theme within a fixed time. Evaluators look at concept, use of material, craftsmanship, and how well the model expresses the idea.

We cover this stage in detail in How to Prepare for the NID Studio Test & Interview.

NID DAT Syllabus: What You Actually Need to Learn

NID does not publish a formal syllabus. Past papers and the 2026 pattern point to these skill areas:

Skill areaWhat to practise
Drawing & sketchingPerspective (1-, 2-, 3-point), proportion, human figures, memory drawing
Visualisation2D to 3D, rotation, exploded views, unusual viewpoints
Colour & compositionColour theory, harmony, contrast, balance, figure-ground
Design thinkingProblem identification, user empathy, ideation, annotation
StorytellingComic strips, narrative scenes, expressing emotions
Material senseClay, paper, wire, fabric, cardboard (for the Studio Test)
AwarenessIndian crafts, design news, everyday objects (for the interview)

Preparation Strategy for NID DAT 2027

  1. Draw every day. Fill at least 3–4 sketchbook pages a day. Focus on everyday scenes, objects and people rather than polished artwork.
  2. Solve past papers under time pressure. The 2026 paper was lengthy. Attempt previous NID papers in a strict 3-hour window and track how long each question takes.
  3. Start hands-on model making early. Most students only start after Prelims, which is too late. Spend 2–3 hours a week building small models with paper, clay and found objects.
  4. Keep an observation journal. Note problems you see in everyday products and spaces. This feeds both design-thinking answers and interview conversations.
  5. Read about design. Follow Indian crafts, product launches and public design projects. Interviewers often ask why something around you is designed the way it is.

For a week-by-week schedule, see our 6-month NID DAT preparation plan. If you are deciding between exams, compare them in NID vs UCEED vs NIFT.

NID DAT vs Other Design Exams

Most design aspirants write NID DAT, UCEED and NIFT together because the core skills overlap. The main differences:

  • NID DAT: fully creative Prelims plus a studio-heavy Mains, any stream eligible.
  • UCEED (IIT Bombay): computer-based aptitude (Part A) plus sketching and design aptitude (Part B), for B.Des at IITs. See our UCEED 2027 guide.
  • NIFT: CAT (creative) + GAT (general aptitude) + Situation Test, for fashion and lifestyle design. See our NIFT 2027 guide.
