NIFT 2027 Entrance Exam: Complete Guide to CAT, GAT, Situation Test & Eligibility
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is India's top public institute for fashion, textile, accessory and lifestyle design. NIFT has 19 campuses across India, and every one admits B.Des students through a single entrance process run with the National Testing Agency (NTA).
This guide covers how the NIFT 2027 entrance works, what each test carries, who can apply, and how to prepare for each stage.
For NIFT B.Des, the Creative Ability Test (CAT) is worth 50% of your final score. That is more than GAT and the Situation Test combined. If your drawing and visual-communication skills are weak, fix them first.

NIFT 2027 Exam Pattern for B.Des
1. Creative Ability Test (CAT) — 50%
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Pen-and-paper |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Format | A small number of drawing / illustration questions |
| Tests | Concept development, observation, colour use, illustration, design ability, innovation |
Typical CAT questions ask you to design a poster, logo, product or garment for a theme, to illustrate a scene from memory, or to create a composition or story from given elements.
2. General Ability Test (GAT) — 30%
GAT is a computer-based MCQ test of about 2 hours. In recent years the B.Des GAT has covered:
| Section | What it tests |
|---|---|
| Quantitative Ability | Arithmetic, percentages, ratios, time and work, interest |
| Communication Ability & English Comprehension | Vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension |
| Analytical & Logical Ability | Reasoning, puzzles, inference |
| General Knowledge & Current Affairs | Fashion industry, general awareness |
| Case Study | Situation-based reasoning on a business or design scenario |
3. Situation Test — 20%
B.Des candidates shortlisted on CAT + GAT take the Situation Test. It is a hands-on test: you get a kit of materials and must build a 3D model on a given theme in a fixed time, without any outside material.
It is evaluated on space visualisation, innovative use of material, colour scheme, construction skill, finesse and overall presentation. You also write a short description of your concept. See our NIFT Situation Test guide for the full breakdown.

How to Prepare for NIFT 2027
For CAT
- Practise themed illustrations daily: "a festival at night", "a sustainable future city", "an emotion as a garment".
- Learn colour theory and practise with one medium consistently. Poster colours and colour pencils are the most common.
- Study fashion illustration basics: croquis proportions, drape, fabric folds.
- Read our sketching guide for design entrance exams.
For GAT
- Revise Class 8–10 maths (percentages, ratios, speed-distance, interest).
- Read a newspaper daily and keep fashion and business GK notes (brands, designers, fashion weeks, textile crafts).
- Take timed sectional MCQ tests twice a week from November onward.
For the Situation Test
- Build one small model a week with paper, thermocol, wire, ice-cream sticks and fabric scraps.
- Practise turning an abstract theme ("freedom", "growth", "balance") into a physical form.

NIFT vs NID vs UCEED
NIFT is the strongest choice if you are drawn to fashion, textiles, accessories or lifestyle products. NID and the IITs (through UCEED) lean more towards product, communication and interaction design. Most aspirants write all three. Read the full comparison in NID vs UCEED vs NIFT.
