Other Design Entrance Exams in India: SEED, MIT-ID, Pearl, UID, WUD, FDDI & More
NID, the IITs (through UCEED) and NIFT are the best-known design schools, but they offer only a limited number of B.Des seats. Many respected private and specialised design institutes run their own entrance exams. Their curricula, studios and industry links are strong, and several have excellent placement and alumni records.
Writing 2–4 of these alongside NID, UCEED and NIFT is the most practical way to secure a good design seat in a competitive year. This guide covers the main ones and how they differ.
Most private design entrances test the same skills as NID and NIFT: sketching, visualisation, design thinking and general aptitude. Often there is a studio test, portfolio review or interview afterwards. Your NID/UCEED/NIFT preparation already covers most of what they need, so the extra effort is mainly applications and logistics.

What About NATA?
NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is for B.Arch, not B.Des. There is some overlap in drawing and aptitude, but architecture is a different degree with different career paths. Write NATA only if architecture interests you.
How to Choose Which Extra Exams to Write
| If you want... | Consider adding |
|---|---|
| A strong all-round private design school | SEED, MIT-ID DAT |
| Many test dates and more chances | UID DAT, WUDAT, Pearl |
| Fashion and lifestyle focus | Pearl, IIAD, FDDI (footwear/leather) |
| Experimental / interdisciplinary design | Srishti Manipal |
Fees vary widely. Private design schools often cost several times more than NID, NIFT or the IITs. Check the total programme fee, hostel costs and scholarships before you apply, not just the application fee.
How to Prepare
Your core preparation for the national exams covers almost everything:
- Sketching and visualisation: see the sketching guide
- General aptitude: the same as NIFT GAT and UCEED Part A preparation; see UCEED strategy
- Studio tests and interviews: see NID Studio Test & Interview prep
- Portfolio reviews: see How to build a design portfolio
For the big three, start with NID vs UCEED vs NIFT. For coaching that covers private-school entrances too, see the Top 10 design entrance coaching institutes.
