CEED 2027: Complete Guide to the M.Des Entrance — Pattern, Eligibility & Preparation
CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) is the national entrance exam for Master of Design (M.Des) and PhD in Design programmes. These are offered at IISc Bengaluru, the IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur, and many other institutes also use the score. Like UCEED, CEED is conducted by IIT Bombay.
CEED is the main route into postgraduate design for engineers, architects, commerce graduates or anyone else with a three-year degree. This guide covers the 2027 pattern, eligibility, how the score works, and how to prepare.
CEED has no age limit and no cap on attempts. Many successful candidates are working professionals who prepare alongside their job. Your degree subject does not matter — an engineer, an economist and a fine-arts graduate all compete on the same paper.

- Also eligible: students who have passed the GD Arts diploma (5-year programme).
- Age: no upper age limit.
- Attempts: unlimited.
Some institutes add their own requirements for specific M.Des specialisations, such as a design or engineering background for certain product design tracks. Check each institute's admission page before applying.
CEED 2027 Exam Pattern
Part A — 150 marks, 1 hour, computer-based
Part A has 44 questions of three types:
| Type | Description | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|
| NAT | Numerical Answer Type: type in a number | None |
| MSQ | Multiple Select: one or more options correct | Yes |
| MCQ | Multiple Choice: one correct option | Yes |
Topics: visual and spatial ability, environmental and social awareness, analytical and logical reasoning, language and creativity, observation and design sensitivity, and design and art history.
Part B — 100 marks, 2 hours, pen-and-paper
Part B has 5 compulsory questions of 20 marks each:
| Question area | What it tests |
|---|---|
| Drawing | Sketching, proportion, perspective, light and shade |
| Creativity | Generating novel, unconventional ideas |
| Product design | Designing a physical product for a defined problem |
| Visual communication | Posters, signs, icons, visual storytelling |
| Interaction / service design | Designing an experience, flow or service |
Unlike UCEED, CEED's Part B makes you attempt all five questions. You can't skip your weakest domain, so practise all five question types, not just the one matching your intended specialisation.
How the CEED Score Is Calculated
- Part A cutoff: only candidates who clear the Part A qualifying mark have Part B evaluated.
- Final score:
Final score = 0.25 × Part A marks + 0.75 × Part B marks - Your CEED score and All-India Rank are used for shortlisting by each institute.
Part B carries 75% of the final score. Your drawing and design answers matter far more than your MCQ performance. Part A only gets you through the door.

After CEED: Institute-Level Selection
The CEED score is only a shortlisting tool. Each institute then runs its own second round:
| Institute type | Typical second stage |
|---|---|
| IIT Bombay (IDC) | Studio test / design test + portfolio review + interview |
| IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Guwahati | Design test and/or interview + portfolio |
| IISc Bengaluru (CPDM) | Test and/or interview |
| IIITDM Jabalpur | Interview and/or test |
So start building your portfolio before CEED, not after the result. Our design portfolio guide applies just as much at M.Des level.
CEED 2027 Preparation Strategy
Months 1–2: Foundations
- Solve 3 past CEED papers untimed to understand the question types.
- Start a daily 45-minute sketching habit (perspective, objects, people in motion).
- Read about design history: the Bauhaus, Indian modernism, the Eames, NID's founding, Indian craft clusters.
Months 3–4: Part B depth
- Rotate through the five Part B areas, one each day.
- For product and interaction questions, practise a fixed structure: problem → user → ideas (3+) → final concept → annotated sketch.
- Time each answer at about 22 minutes, since you have 120 minutes for 5 questions.
Final 6–8 weeks: Mocks
- Take full 3-hour mocks with Part A on a screen and Part B on paper.
- Review Part B answers with a mentor or peer. Self-evaluation tends to be too generous.
For general sketching technique, see our sketching guide for design entrance exams. For book recommendations, see Best books for design entrance preparation.
CEED vs NID DAT (M.Des)
NID runs its own M.Des DAT with Prelims and Mains, separate from CEED. Many M.Des aspirants write both:
| CEED | NID DAT (M.Des) | |
|---|---|---|
| Leads to | M.Des at IISc, IITs, IIITDM + others | M.Des at NID campuses |
| Pattern | Part A (MCQ) + Part B (subjective) | Prelims + Studio Test/Interview |
| Specialisation choice | At institute application stage | At DAT application stage |
Read the NID DAT 2027 guide for NID's process.
